Leadership is needed to meet the urgent challenge of climate change. There is a growing consensus that key actions are required in order to avoid catastrophic change in the earth's climate systems, and so in 2007 and 2008 LEAD will focus its international training programme around the response to climate change.

International Training Sessions have been a core feature of LEAD Fellows Training for more than 15 years. These cross-cultural, multi-sectoral training events bring together diverse groups of emerging leaders from across the globe, primarily from the developing world, to share knowledge and experiences and to hone the skills required to meet key sustainability challenges.

LEAD's approach to training is based on tested adult-learning methodology that is experiential, learner-centred, participatory, highly dynamic and also enjoyable. Trainers introduce a relevant and current sustainability topic through a mix of presentations, interactive panel discussions, skills modules, place-based case studies, site visits, peer-to-peer learning, and individual and team projects. The aim of this process is for participants to develop understanding on the theme and formulate personal responses that reflect their own positions and responsibilities.

Key Dimensions of the 2007 International Training Session

  • A focus on important climate change topics, including deforestation, adaptation, carbon offsetting and renewable energy, with further consideration of the cross-cutting issues of gender, development, justice and the post-2012 framework;
  • Local and international leaders in the field(s) of climate change and sustainable development;
  • Site visits around West Java to deepen understanding of the complexity of the climate challenge locally and globally;
  • Skills modules to learn and practice key leadership skills including communication and multi-stakeholder dialogue and engagement;
  • Group presentations that encourage participants to work together to synthesize the content, skills and experiential learning from the week, and better understand how climate change resonates in their own contexts and lives;
  • Opportunities for participants to network with one another, to exhibit their LEAD projects, and to share their experiences in sustainable development;
  • Key outputs and learnings to be communicated in a side event at the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 13) held the following week, also in Indonesia.

Participants' Profiles
Attending this session will be up to 150 mid-career professionals drawn from every sector and who demonstrate outstanding leadership ability or potential. Participants reflect the geographic spread of the LEAD network, coming from across Africa, India, Pakistan, China, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia, among others. Upon completing their LEAD training, participants become LEAD Fellows and join one of the world's most diverse networks of professionals. Fellows frequently mention the value of being part of the large LEAD family, where lifelong relationships are formed and continue to be strengthened for years following the programme.
